Pure anhydrous acetic acid (glacial acetic acid) is a colorless, hygroscopic liquid with a freezing point of 16.6°C (62°F). Upon solidification, it forms colorless crystals. Although it is classified as a weak acid based on its dissociation ability in aqueous solutions, acetic acid is corrosive, and its vapors can irritate the eyes and nose.
As a simple carboxylic acid, glacial acetic acid is an important chemical reagent. It is also used in the production of cellulose acetate for photographic film, polyvinyl acetate for wood adhesives, as well as many synthetic fibers and fabrics.
